1. Artist Profile
Enrique Neto is a contemporary Brazilian artist born in Rio de Janeiro. He is known for his sculptures, immersive installations, and participatory environments. Since the 1990s, he has combined softness, suspended forms, and accessible spaces to develop a creative language that emphasizes bodily perception. His works often alter the scale and way of walking of the exhibition space, allowing viewers to enter the work beyond mere observation through staying, touching, smelling, and moving.
2. Artistic Concepts
Nieto focuses on the connections that can be re-perceived between the human body, the natural environment, and social relationships. Drawing from contexts such as neo-constructivism, minimalism, and biomimicry, he responds to them with flexible, intimate, and open structures. His works do not view the body as a passive object to be observed, but instead use sensory experiences as a way to understand space; weight, balance, breathing, rest, and shared presence become important dimensions of his artistic concept.
3. Main Materials, Manufacturing Processes, and Technologies
Nito often uses elastic polyamide fabrics, nylon stockings, cotton, foam, ropes and knit fabrics, combined with fillers or tactile materials such as spices, seeds, granules and stone. Stretching, hanging, bearing weight, sewing, filling and weaving create soft surfaces that form volumes that fall, expand, wrap or connect; the transparency of the material, combined with its scent and weight, contributes to the spatial composition and evokes a skin-like sensation.
