1. Artist Profile
Arghwan Hoxlavi is an Iranian-born artist living in the United States. She has a background in graphic design, illustration, and painting, and her work often weaves together the visual heritage of Persian miniature painting, surreal narrative, and contemporary painting language. Her works are characterized by sculptural-like visual structures that address tensions within the memory of migration, cultural experiences, and individual situations.
2. Artistic Concepts
Horstveit focuses on the contradictory state between freedom and restriction, public norms and private consciousness. She organizes multiple narratives through female figures, architectural fragments, decorative patterns, and symbolic objects, allowing intimate experiences to intersect with social and political contexts. The images do not reduce the characters to victims, but emphasize their gazes, wills, and potential capacities for action.
3. Main Materials, Manufacturing Processes, and Technologies
The artist primarily uses acrylics, cotton canvas, ready-made textiles, and wood panels, and mounts her paintings on irregular wooden supports. By stitching, covering, cutting, and layering, she expands the flat boundaries, bringing the individual elements to the foreground of the image; the patterns, textures, and colors of the textiles are both involved in the shaping of the characters’ costumes and space, and also carry cultural associations.
