Luiz Zerbini|Luis Zerbini

Brazil

1. Artist Profile

Born in São Paulo and currently living and working in Rio de Janeiro, Luiz Zerbini is one of the important artists of the “80s generation” in Brazil. He is known for his large-scale, saturated-color paintings, as well as his practice of photography, watercolor, sculpture, installation, video, and printmaking. His work continues to be inspired by tropical landscapes, exploring the intersection between figurative nature, urban experience, and geometric order.

2. Artistic Concepts

Zerbini uses the landscape as an open field for observing relationships between nature, history, and culture. Lush vegetation, architectural grids, everyday objects, and image archives are layered within the image, making the natural landscape no longer just a representation of objects but also a structure where memory, modernity, and social context intersect. He approaches the tension between sensory experience and ordered systems through both figurative depiction and abstract composition.

3. Main Materials, Manufacturing Processes, and Technologies

The artist’s work centers on painting, extending its practice between photography, slides, collage, single-plate prints, sculpture, and spatial installations. Her single-plate prints often generate textural and morphological traces through direct contact between plants and paper; at the same time, she employs old slide frames, color film, and a variety of paper materials to create grids. Materials such as silk, felt, stone plates, and wood panels also expand the tactile and layered nature of the images.
