1. Artist Profile
Born in Seattle in 1959 and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Jessica Stockholde is an artist and educator with American and Canadian backgrounds. Since the 1980s, she has expanded the boundaries of painting and sculpture through installations, sculptures, collages, and site-specific works, often organizing exhibition spaces with buildings, everyday objects, and industrial materials together into highly colorful spatial configurations.
2. Artistic Concepts
She understands painting as spatial relationships that can be extended to the ground, walls, ceilings, and surrounding environment, rather than as independent paintings. By juxtaposing familiar objects with their functional qualities, tactile sensations, and colors, her works bring abstract order and everyday reality together; seemingly random and complex combinations are actually achieved through balance achieved through scale, gravity, viewing paths, and color rhythms.
3. Main Materials, Manufacturing Processes, and Technologies
The works often utilize ready-made and mass-produced materials, combined with wood, plywood, brick, concrete, plasterboard, fabric, wire, paper, plastic, lighting fixtures, and acrylic paints. The materials are not treated to create a uniform surface, but retain their weight, softness, gloss, texture, and original purpose; the walls, floors, doors and windows of the exhibition space, and even the outdoor environment become part of the work’s structure.
