1. Artist Profile

Pamela Caughey is an American artist and educator based in Hamilton, Montana. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983 and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from Montana State University in 2010. Her work spans painting, mixed media, and wax drawing, and she continues to teach workshops and art classes.

2. Artistic Concepts

She uses abstract painting as a field for experimentation and reflection, focusing on psychological, social, and biological issues while emphasizing the aesthetic tension of the painting. Her work emphasizes the multifaceted exploration of images, concepts, and forms, allowing emotions, perceptions, and abstract structures to gradually emerge through repeated trial and error, problem solving, and critical scrutiny.

3. Main Materials, Manufacturing Processes, and Technologies

She primarily uses oil paint and cold wax mediums, wax crayons, acrylics, and mixed media, and works with multiple layers on hard supports such as panels. Paper elements such as old book pages and photocopies can also be incorporated into collage or image transfer processes, creating complex and tactile images where pigments, wax layers, and paper materials interact to create opacity, exposure, overlay, and erosion.
