1. Artist Profile

Wangechi Mutu (born 1972 in Nairobi) is a visual artist active between Kenya and the United States. She is widely known for her female figures in collage and has expanded her practice to include painting, sculpture, video, installation, and performance. Her cross-cultural life and artistic training have resulted in a creative language that combines bodily imagination, mythic narrative, and social criticism.

2. Artistic Concepts

Through the blending of human, animal, plant, and mechanical components, Mutu shapes a hybrid body that oscillates between fascination, trauma, power, and transformation. She reworks popular images and existing representations of Africa and women, questioning racialized viewing, gendered disciplining, colonial histories, and consumer culture; at the same time, she opens up imaginaries about migration, ecology, remediation, and subject agency through fictional mythology.

3. Main Materials, Manufacturing Processes, and Technologies

She often collages, paints, and manipulates with media such as cardboard, using pages from magazines, printed images, paper, ink, watercolor, and pigment. By tearing, folding, pasting, and hand-drawing, she breaks and stitches together images. Her sculptural and installation practices also emphasize the juxtaposition of multiple textures; the juxtaposition of media creates a continuous relationship between the skin, organs, plants, and landscape.
