Kara Walker is an American contemporary artist known for large narrative installations composed of black paper-cut silhouettes. She juxtaposes media such as images, painting, printmaking, sculpture, film, and projection to transform historical narratives into a visually dynamic viewing experience that continuously touches upon the legacy of American slavery and its contemporary echoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using the popular and seemingly elegant portrait silhouette of the 18th and 19th centuries, Walker reverses its order and affinity. She mobilizes stereotyped images, irony, allegory, and unstable narrative perspectives to reveal the intertwined histories of race, gender, desire, power, and violence; the viewer is both drawn to the images and forced to examine their own viewing positions and cultural memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her signature method is to cut black paper into clear silhouettes of figures and scenes, directly attach them to a white wall, and expand them into a circular silhouette scene.
