Artist Profile

David Hammons, born in Springfield, Illinois, USA in 1943, is an important contemporary artist active in the art contexts of Los Angeles and New York. Since the late 1960s, he has been creating through body markings, sculpture, installations, performance, and public art, incorporating street experiences, everyday objects, and institutional spaces into his practice, and reevaluating the value of art and the relationship between viewers in a nimble, restrained, and challenging manner.

2. Artistic Concepts

Hammons continuously explores the lives of Black people in American society, racial representation, class structure, and cultural affiliations. He is adept at manipulating objects with social codes, sports symbols, and urban remnants, creating a tension between humor, absurdity, and unease. His work does not offer a single position; instead, through absences, concealment, chance, and transactional situations, it questions the art system, market logic, and the viewer’s established judgments.

3. Main Materials, Manufacturing Processes, and Technologies

Hammons often uses found objects and ephemeral materials, including hair clippings collected at barbershops, paper bags, bottle caps, chicken bones, wine bottles, rocks, old fabrics, and street waste. Early body markings were transferred onto bodies and clothing using oils, pigments, or graphite; later, through binding, wrapping, hanging, assembling, covering, and intervening on-site, the source of the materials, their smells, their wear and tear, and their social associations were all involved in the work’s meaning.

4. Anatomy and analysis of the work

The in-depth study of the selected works is based on the images numbered 01–10.
