Artist Profile

Dolores Salcedo is a Colombian sculptor and installation artist born and based in Bogotá. Through long-term research and a careful approach to testimonies and everyday objects, she addresses war, disappearance, displacement, and social trauma in Colombia and in broader contexts. Her work often takes the form of restraint and silence, bringing private losses into the space of public memory and mourning.

2. Artistic Concepts

Salcedo views sculpture as a deontological practice that confronts violence that cannot be fully reproduced. She does not directly narrate events, but instead uses objects that are absent, blocked, broken, and unusable to suggest the repressed lived experience; the works refuse to speak for the victims, instead retaining a place for grief, witnessing, and unfinished history.

3. Main Materials, Manufacturing Processes, and Technologies

She selects materials with traces of habitation and the body—furniture, wood, clothing, concrete, metal, petals—and expands the project to architectural spaces and public places. Through juxtaposition, filling, embedding, stitching, pressing, and handwork, she transforms familiar objects into fragile forms that have been rendered dysfunctional. The weight, wear, and residues of materials become carriers of absence and trauma.

4. Anatomy and analysis of the work

The in-depth study of the selected works is based on the images numbered 01–10. It is presented in detail for each piece, examining aspects such as the image and spatial structure, color relationships, material surfaces, production techniques, and visual language.
